Iris Louise Chase, kanekalon, italian lambswool, paint, dried flowers, 79cm x 104cm

Iris Louise Chase is one of four sails I created for "Black Liberation: The Diaspora is inside of me." The materials for all of the sails are a conversation about whether "Black women are natural or unnatural?" A debate contained within whiteness. The director of the BSR said "there was something Native American" about this piece. Iris Louise Chase is the name of my mother. This is her sail.

*A note about sails. They are displayed on a wall but in the imagination they are part of a boat for black female freedom and liberation. The black females that are the subjects of the sails deserve to be free. We are traveling together with our marine mammal kin to safer waters.*

*A note about materials. Kanekalon is a toxic fake hair extension sold predominantly to African Americans. Sheepswool, cleaned by my own hands, lovingly freed from blood, flesh and feces. Milky oats and Wheat.
